Here is the story of Johnny and the song 1982, as told by John Schlitt and posted on Petra's facebook on April 29, 2013:
After I was fired from Head East due to my out-of-control drug addiction, I wanted to get a band together so I could keep doing music. I was going to 'show them' - I wanted to be bigger and better than Head East ever was. So I formed a new band, called Johnny, at the end of 1979. I don't remember much from that time because I was in the zone of a self-induced 24/7 high, snorting coke to get up and booze to come back down. Those six months from January to August 1980 were a very tumultuous time for me. Through the haze of that time period we had some musical accomplishments; a credit to my band and not to me. One of those accomplishments is a song called 1982, written by my brother Jeff Schlitt, who played keys for Johnny, along with Troy Tipton on guitar, Don Colluci on keys, Jeff 'Burk' Burckhard on bass, and Jim McNealy on drums. I'll let Jeff tell the story of the song in his own words:
"Back in 1979 I was watching the movie The Late Great Planet Earth, which was a best-selling book and then one of the top-grossing movies of 1979. The movie chronicled prophesied events in the Bible, showing that civilization was headed for doomsday. After watching that movie, I sat down that same night and wrote 1982 in about an hour. I have no idea why I thought the end of the world would come in 1982, but the year sounded good, lyrically! I didn’t know John was leaving Head East and had no idea he would be recording the song when I wrote it. I was just doing what I like to do: write songs!" I was very proud of my brother Jeff and his contributions; as I listen to 1982 it's almost like hearing it for the first time. I realize I had a very talented band – and I am honored to have been associated with them. I also realize that there was an unseen hand on my life at that time – the enemy wanted those six months in 1980 to end in suicide – and I almost went through with it – but God had other plans. As always, the Lord takes the negative and turns it into a very positive!
